A team of astronomers led by the University of Hawaii has discovered a huge cosmic bubble, called Hoʻoleilana, which might be a remnant of the birth of the Universe. This structure, located 820 million light years from Earth, defies theoretical expectations and might challenge our understanding of the expansion of the universe (The Universe is the collection of everything that exists and the laws that govern it.).
The red region (left) shows the shell surrounded by Acoustic Oscillation (Acoustics is a branch of physics whose object is the study of…) Baryonic, with galaxies (Galaxies is a French journal quarterly devoted to science fiction. With…) individuals represented as tiny points of light. The blue filaments show the great cosmic network, with features previously known as Laniakea in evidence.

Brent Tully, astronomer at the Institute of Astronomy. .) from UH, and his team found this bubble within a network of galaxies. According to the results published in The Astrophysical Journal, these massive structures are predicted by the Big Bang theory. and hot that the universe experienced ago…). They would be the result of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the matter of the primitive universe.
“We weren’t looking for this structure. It’s so large that it overflows the edges of the area of the sky we were analyzing,” explained Brent Tully. The bubble has a diameter of one billion light years, well beyond theoretical expectations.
The new findings mention that these massive structures are predicted by the Big Bang theory, resulting from three-dimensional oscillations in the matter of the early universe, known as Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO).

Daniel Pomarède from the University of Paris-Saclay contributed to cartography in three dimensions (In common sense, the notion of dimension refers to the size ; the dimensions of a room…) by HoĘ»oleilana. This mapping made it possible to understand its composition and its relationships with its environment (The environment is everything that surrounds us. It is all of the natural elements and…).
HoĘ»oleilana’s discovery was made possible thanks to the Cosmicflows-4 catalog, the largest compilation to date of precise distances to galaxies. This catalog was co-published by Brent Tully in Fall 2022.
