The chemical world is an immense reservoir of unknown, of which only 1% of compounds have been identified. Researchers believe that still unknown elements might revolutionize fields ranging from medicine to the fight once morest gaz has greenhouse effect.

Far from lacking curiosity, chemists have been exploring this vast universe since Dmitri Mendeleïev designed the periodic table in 1869. Chemical compounds result from the association of two atoms or more. While the monde only knows 118 different elements, the compound possibilities are almost endless. For compounds with only two atoms, there are already 6,903 possibilities. Three atoms? We reach 1.6 million of possible compounds.

The chemical rules, however, are not set in stone. Certain noble gases, known for their inertia, sometimes form compounds. The methods of research vary: modification of an existing compound, use of new raw materials. Discoveries can be inspired by nature, as was the case for the penicillindiscovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming.

Today, modern techniques such as X-ray radiography or MRI make it easier to determine the structure of new compounds. However, creating new structures remains a challenge. That’s why scientists continue to explore the natural world, even the most hidden corners, in search of inspiration for new chemistries.
