Come up with electricity and carbon emissions issues
Start of movement to use eco-friendly recycled products in the field
Most of the actual sets are mostly discarded or abandoned following being produced for broadcast or filming. Not only does it take a long time to produce the set, but also environmental pollution caused by materials that are used once and thrown away is also pointed out as a problem.
An alternative to this is Virtual Studio. Virtual studio and VFX technology have become strong following Corona 19 because you can call up the place you want to implement and shoot at any time. By using technology, there is no need to build a set, and shooting that is dangerous and impossible in real life can be made possible with virtual production.
VA Corporation introduced ‘VA Studio Hanam’, Asia’s largest virtual production studio, in Hanam City last June. It plans to build a virtual production multi-studio with a total area of regarding 29,000 pyeong in the suburbs of Seoul within this year to strengthen the infrastructure for creating next-generation immersive content.
CJ ENM invested regarding 180 billion won in Paju, Gyeonggi-do to create a super-large future studio of 1,600 pyeong, the largest in Korea with 13 buildings, including a VFX studio with the largest LED wall in Korea.
But technology doesn’t solve everything. Electricity emitted when using technologies such as VFX and rendering, or carbon emission treatment problems. An official said, “If someone raises a question that the garbage from the set and the carbon issue work caused by technology are similar when compared to the equivalent exchange, we have to honestly look at what is more problematic.”
“However, the point where we can confirm that the use of technology can be an alternative is to the extent that we can reduce the number of shootings to 1 by thoroughly conducting simulations before shooting,” he said.
Increasing the number of open studios like Hollywood is another issue to consider. Although it is a plan that director Jun-ik Lee came up with regarding the improvement environment necessary for the process of increasing competitiveness of K-contents, the environmental improvement naturally follows. At the time of the last Teabing and Paramount + Media Day, director Lee Jun-ik said, “There is no so-called open studio like the US in Korea. It was desperate,” he said.
Not only the set, but also the garbage discharged from the filming site is a treasure trove. When actress Gong Hyo-jin started the environmental entertainment show ‘Be harmless from today’ in October of last year, she told her colleagues, “It’s been regarding a year since I stopped sending cheering teas to the field, such as coffee trucks. There are too many disposables. There is a limit to what you can drink. There is a coffee shop, but it is not only stressful to see them come and go 2-3 times a day and are thrown away.
And many officials nodded their heads at Gong Hyo-jin’s proposal to consider the environment. An official from the distribution company NEW said, “When they start one work, they send coffee trucks and make and distribute goods. At this time, to reduce unnecessary waste, we are preparing to plan goods with vegan products. Also, at the site, they received recycled goods, recycled paper, and eco-friendly marks. We try to make the most of our products.”
It’s impossible to film because you care regarding all environmental issues. Nevertheless, just as small water droplets gather to form a large sea, the future is not bleak as there are people who expect the butterfly effect.
