Due to the rapid spread of the Omicron mutation in the domestic novel coronavirus infection (hereinfollowing referred to as Corona 19), the number of new confirmed cases recorded 20,000 for the first time.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said that as of 00:00 on the fifth and last day of the Lunar New Year holiday, the number of confirmed cases increased by 20,270 to a cumulative total of 888,310.

New domestic confirmed cases There were 21,111 confirmed cases and 159 imported cases.

Since the omicron mutation, which has more than twice the transmission power than the existing delta mutation, has become the dominant species in Korea, the number of new confirmed cases is increasing day by day.

Last week, 80% of domestic confirmed cases of Corona 19 showed Omicron mutations, establishing Omicron as the dominant species.

In the midst of this, as there is a lot of movement and contact during the Lunar New Year holiday, Omicron seems to be spreading more rapidly. Considering the possibility that the number of tests decreased slightly during the holiday period, the number of confirmed cases following the holiday is expected to increase significantly.

Although the number of confirmed cases has increased, it has not led to an increase in the number of severe cases or deaths.

As of 00:00 on that day, there were 278 cases of severe serious illness, six fewer than the previous day.

The death toll rose by 15, bringing the total to 6,787. The cumulative fatality rate is 0.77%.

The fatality rate of COVID-19 was 0.91% in the early and middle of last month, but it is gradually decreasing as Omicron, which has a criticality rate of one fifth that of delta, has become the dominant species.

There were 89,420 home-treated patients as of 00:00 that day, an increase of 6,560 from the previous day (82,860). There are 436 home treatment managed medical institutions as of 00:00 the previous day, and a total of 102,000 patients can be managed.
