[이데일리 김미경 기자] A female bodybuilder who appeared on Netflix’s survival variety show ‘Physical: 100’ suffered from bad comments regarding her appearance. Some even put their hands on her thighs, starting with reactions such as ‘Women have too many muscles’, ‘More gross than men’, and ‘It’s too scary’. In an interview with a media outlet, he said, “No matter what others say regarding me, I am so beautiful and proud of my body.”
The main character in the novel, ‘Uno’, is also a female bodybuilder. She started her fitness a year ago to endure the harsh male cultural company life. She is 29 years old and has been working for 7 years. Exercising at the local gym ‘Smith Machine’ as a friend is a stigma of her life. He just challenges himself with the desire to train his body more systematically, but faces an unexpected ambush. It is constantly pointed out that he needs to smile broadly as well as lose weight. He also finds himself in ironic situations, such as having to wear a bikini or wearing 15 cm high heels, which is the upper limit of the discipline. To U-no, who has to manage her diet, her colleagues say without hesitation, ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’ ?” he worries.
The book captures the irony of being forced to be ‘feminine’ in the world of bodybuilding, which jumped into the world with the idea of escaping from the conventional female image. It contains sharp points regarding the gender of the body.
The artist actually conceived the work by observing athletes who train their bodies professionally while attending a gym for regarding two years. She said, “At first, I thought of the expressions ‘I want to be like a man’ or ‘I want to be less like a woman’, but in the end I used the metaphor ‘I want to be a different creature’.” It makes us think once more regarding ‘gender’ as something that is perceived and seen.
