“Hallelujah!”
Brian, who opened his eyes following being drugged in a hospital bed, exclaims: It is actor Cha Seung-won (53) who completed Brian with fear derived from ridiculousness, belief and obsession maximized as a reaction to physical weakness, and the bizarre seething.
The movie ‘Solo Battle 2’ (director Baek Jong-yeol), which was released on Netflix on the 17th, is regarding detective ‘Won-ho’ (Cho Jin-woong), who is still chasing ‘Mr. A crime action film depicting the vicious war between ‘Brian’ (Cha Seung-won) and ‘Big Knife’ (Han Hyo-joo), who came from China to resolve the situation. After its release, harsh criticism has been pouring in that it does not live up to the reputation of its predecessor, ‘Solo Battle 1’ (2018).
Cha Seung-won, who appeared in both episodes 1 and 2 with Cho Jin-woong, said, “When I first received the script, I just wanted to finish ‘Brian’ well. There were no clear likes or dislikes or comparisons between his previous works and the work itself, such as the identity of ‘Mr. Lee’ or the narrative of ‘Rock’. “In my area, I focused on what I might do,” he said.
“The story itself is already out there. I boldly left out anything that wasn’t something I wanted to discuss, and focused more on Brian himself. ‘If Brian lives, what happens next?’ That’s all I thought regarding. Unfavorable reaction (to the work)? “It’s upsetting, but (even though it’s an unexpected reaction), that’s really up to the viewers. (Laughs)”

After much deliberation, he said that he wanted to give Brian a more active identity than before, and introduced him as “a character who was reborn with an obsession with the reality that he wants to become Teacher Lee but cannot become one, a seething desire for fame and recognition, and an insatiable complex.”
“After receiving physical damage, ‘Brian’ becomes increasingly angry at ‘Rock’ and obsessed with Mr. Lee. His whole body was hunched over and only his face was sticking out. Even though the pain caused by the burns was so great that even the sound of his breathing was uneven, I wanted to reveal the strange and strong will to somehow express his emotions. “I wanted to give a different sense of determination and fear of madness than the first film.”
It must not have been easy to play the same character once more following five years. “It was a bit daunting,” he said. “It wasn’t too difficult, but it was an unfamiliar experience that I had never experienced before.” “I think I felt familiar and felt new because many things changed, starting with the external aspects,” he recalled.
He said, “The reason genre films are difficult is that they can lose a sense of reality and the distance from the audience can become too large. “(So) I was thinking regarding how to give the character a grounded reality, and created it by closely analyzing and reinterpreting his words and actions from his perspective,” he emphasized.
“Because it was a work and movie that I worked hard on, it is meaningful regardless of whether the results are good or bad. Because I’m not the only person who filmed this. (Laughs) I don’t think there’s anything to talk regarding in depth in a narrow-minded way because it’s just that movie. If it’s revealed to the world, oh my gosh, I think it should be left to the viewers. ”
While Cha Seung-won responded boldly to the harsh criticism of his work, he did not spare praise for his juniors who worked with him. Photo I Netflix
He also did not spare praise for his juniors. Han Hyo-joo made an extraordinary transformation as ‘Big Knife’, Oh Seung-hoon gave a passionate performance as the new ‘Rock’, and Seo Ha-jung gave a passionate performance as ‘Brian’s right hand man.
Cha Seung-won said, “Following ‘Moving’, hasn’t Hyo-joo truly shown the end of her challenges with this work? I thought he was really great as an actor. “He went through a lot of mental and physical hardship (severe weight management), but he put in the effort and it was great,” he praised.
Regarding Oh Seung-hoon, “He is a friend whose fundamentals are really solid. He cheered, saying, “He did better than expected,” and regarding newcomer Seo Ha-jeong, “He worked really hard. “It wasn’t an easy scene in every way, but he jumped into it with all his might,” he said, giving a thumbs up. He added, “They were very sincere and good actors. “I really liked the energy while we were together,” he said with affection.
The story of Cho Jin-woong, who co-starred in parts 1 and 2, was not left out. Cha Seung-won said, “We are in contact often, but when someone talks, don’t you feel whether or not they are sincere? But Cho Jin-woong’s words to me always feel sincere.
“It’s good to have such a good junior,” he said, expressing deep trust.
“There were times when I was extremely greedy and sharp. Now, while that sharpness was always there, I think I now have the skill to naturally control it according to the situation. I also learned how to let go of what I need to let go.
He said, “In the past, when I went on set, I was busy doing my own thing, and when an actor did well, I was jealous and envious. (It’s not like it doesn’t exist at all now.) Now, I get to see all of these actors in general, and we start talking regarding them a little bit. I think that’s what separates good seniors from bad seniors. “There are people who lead the scene a little more smoothly and comfortably and make things run smoothly, and I’m trying to become that kind of actor these days,” he added.
