(Following the interview ①) Actor Joo Won celebrates his 16th anniversary this year. Having built up a unique filmography through various challenges that always break expectations, he succeeded in showing a new face in the Netflix movie ‘Carter’ with extreme action and a wild character of demons that go beyond his limits.
In ‘Carter’ (director Jeong Byung-gil), Joo-won played the main character, Carter, who was put into a mysterious operation. As a person who must regain himself and succeed in the mission within the given time, he must complete the mission to bring back the girl who is the only cure for the virus that has devastated the world without knowing her name or age. When he opens his eyes, an unknown device is embedded in his head, and in a dire situation with a commercial bomb mounted in his mouth, he moves only relying on an unfamiliar voice in his ear.
For Carter, he increased his weight by regarding 7kg and bulked up, and he poured his passion through rigorous pre-training for four months.
Joo Won said, “I wanted to make the character as simple as possible.” “Inside, the story is very complicated, but since the film itself is a one-take style, I thought that I would not feel bored if I expressed it simply. He expressed his anger and sadness as much as possible and expressed it as simply as possible, and he went all-in on the mission while paying attention only to the level of his voice and visuals. We analyzed it in a one-dimensional way,” he explained.
“Carter tried to express himself as a strong man no matter what. If I were actually in this situation, like Carter, I was so immersed in the role that I felt like I might do it if I held on to it. .
“I am one of those actors who always wants to make a difference. Among the many strengths of ‘Carter’, the character change was so attractive to me that I only wanted to do it well. Maybe that’s why I didn’t mind when I shaved my head and put on the surgical scar hole makeup on the back of my head. No, I was rather excited. Rather than worrying, I started filming every day with joy and curiosity. It was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss as I was always waiting for a better change and a new experience.”
“This year is the 16th anniversary of my debut, and looking back, I was always active and challenging.” He continued, “Maybe that’s why there were no easy roles every time, and I don’t think I did a lot of ordinary roles. He made his debut as a villain, passed ‘The Good Doctor’ and ‘Gaksital’, and following that, it was a series of challenges,” he smiled proudly.
“In a way, I think I’ve been able to keep the beliefs I’ve had since I learned acting. Of course, there may be likes and dislikes, and the results are unpredictable, so there is anxiety that it may or may not be loved by the public, but I am confident that it is the path I should take. I am satisfied with myself that I brought the belief that ‘if you are an actor, you should do it’. I want to become an actor who continues to change in the future. I look forward to another opportunity to take on a new challenge like ‘Carter’ and make a strong transformation (laughs).”
