(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = The UN has called for an immediate ceasefire in Mariupol, a port city in southern Ukraine besieged by Russian forces.

Amin Awad, the United Nations crisis coordinator for Ukraine, issued a statement on the 24th (local time) urging an immediate ceasefire in Mariupol to evacuate civilians trapped in the city.

“The lives of tens of thousands of civilians, including women, children and the elderly, are at risk in Mariupol,” Awad said.

“The longer the ceasefire is, the more lives are at risk,” he said. “They must be able to evacuate safely today, right now. Tomorrow will be too late.

Coordinator Awad’s statement came following an unsuccessful attempt the day before to evacuate civilians from Mariupol.

The Ukrainian government said the day before that an attempt to evacuate civilians from Mariupol had failed due to Russian threats.

Mariupol is a key point linking Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014 by force, with the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by pro-Russian separatist rebels.

Since Russia has made Mariupol its top target from the beginning of the war and has been besieging it for nearly two months, Mariupol is mentioned as the city with the most serious humanitarian crisis.

The exact extent of the casualties of Ukrainian civilians is not known as Russian forces occupy most of Mariupol.
