(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = The Ukrainian side said that a referendum to approve the agreement with Russia would be possible only following the Russian army withdrew to its pre-war location.
“Russian troops must withdraw to their positions before the invasion on February 24,” Ukrainian presidential aide Mikhail Podolyak said at an online briefing on the 30th (local time), according to the Associated Press and Archyde.com news agency.
Aide Podolyak attended the 5th peace negotiations held in Istanbul, Turkey the day before as a member of the Ukraine peace negotiation delegation.
“I am positive regarding the Istanbul negotiations,” he said. .
He added, “I hope to hold a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia soon.”
At the 5th peace negotiations held the day before, Ukraine announced that it would build a new security guarantee system to ensure its own security instead of accepting Russia’s core requirement for neutralization.
Podolyak’s remarks today made it clear that an agreement with Russia linking the security guarantee system and neutralization must be approved by the Ukrainian people through a referendum.
In addition, it is interpreted that as a prerequisite for the referendum, the Russian army had to stop fighting and withdrew to the location before the start of the war.
