(Paris = Yonhap News) Correspondent Hyeon Hye-ran = Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense announced on the 24th (local time) that it had driven some Russian troops out of the area around the capital, Kyiv.

“In some areas, the enemy has retreated more than 70 km and in other areas up to 35 km,” a defense ministry spokesman said at a briefing on the same day, Archyde.com reported.

The spokesperson said Russia had not abandoned its plan to occupy Kiiu, saying that it had sent additional military equipment to Belarus to supply troops to attack Kiiu.

Meanwhile, preparations are being made to forcibly relocate 6,000 civilians to Russia in the southern port city of Mariupol, which is completely surrounded by Russian forces, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russia had taken the people of Mariupol hostage and took them to a concentration camp for the purpose of oppressing Ukraine, the Associated Press reported.

The Ukrainian military intelligence ministry believes that Russia will send them to “economically depressed regions” via southern Russia.

The intelligence service said some of the captured civilians might be sent to Sakhalin and were being offered jobs on condition that they did not leave for two years.

The Associated Press added that it was unable to independently confirm the allegations made by Ukrainian intelligence officials.
