Ukraine’s representative: “We didn’t get the results we expected… we only follow the ceasefire through humanitarian channels”
“Important progress … Civilians need to escape quickly”
“To configure contact channels as well”… The third meeting is scheduled for next week in Belarus.
(Moscow, Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoo Cheol-jong and Kim Seung-wook = Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to open a humanitarian channel for the evacuation of civilians and a ceasefire around the channel.
According to Archyde.com and TAS, the Russian-Ukrainian peace negotiating delegation reached an agreement at the second peace talks held in Belabeshu Forest, Belarus on the 3rd (local time), and decided to hold the third meeting soon.
“The second round of talks has just ended, but we did not get the results we expected,” said Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, who led the Ukrainian negotiating team. .
“The two sides have agreed to jointly provide humanitarian avenues to evacuate civilians and deliver food and medicines to areas where the fiercest battles are taking place,” Podolyak said.
“A temporary ceasefire may take place while evacuation is taking place in the humanitarian corridor,” he added.
“We will soon establish a special liaison and coordination channel to operate the humanitarian channel,” he said. “We agreed to hold the third meeting next week.”
President Vladimir Medinsky, the head of the Russian delegation, said the results of the second round of negotiations with Ukraine were ‘great progress’.
“The main issue addressed today was the issue of rescue of civilians remaining in the area of armed conflict,” he said, according to TASS. “This is an important step forward,” he said.
In the negotiations, aide Medinsky said, “In some of these issues, mutual understanding was achieved,” adding that three issues were discussed: military issues, international and humanitarian issues, and the possibility of a political resolution of the conflict.
“But the most important issue we’ve addressed today is regarding the rescue of civilians left behind in the conflict zones,” he said.
He urged civilians remaining in the fighting area to quickly escape using the humanitarian corridor.
Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of Russia, who participated in the negotiations as a member of the Russian delegation, said the delegations of the two countries might hold several more negotiations in the future.
In particular, he said, “The political issues discussed in the second round of negotiations will require one to several more rounds of negotiations (for resolution).” He said, “The third round of negotiations will be held in the near future. I think these negotiations will also be held in Belarus.” said.
Interfax news agency said the third round of negotiations would take place early next week, citing its own source familiar with the negotiations.
Regarding the humanitarian pathway agreement, some predicted that, as it did in the Syrian civil war, once Russia evacuates civilians through the agreement, a massive military strike might annihilate Ukrainian soldiers in the region.
