[디지털데일리 김도현 기자] Samsung Electronics is regarding to launch its 5th generation folding (foldable) smartphone. It is noteworthy that the public event (unpack) is held in Korea more than two weeks earlier than in previous years. Unlike the 3rd and 4th generation models where there was no big difference, this new work is expected to change to some extent. In the case of the supply chain, it is in a state of stability as it has reached the 5th.

Samsung Electronics will hold ‘Samsung Galaxy Unpack 2023’ at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 26th and showcase the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. It is predicted that advance reservations will be made from the 1st of next month and will be officially released in major countries on the 11th.

Although the global economic recession has not yet been resolved, Samsung Electronics is expecting more sales compared to its predecessor. This is because wrinkles, weight, and usability, which were cited as disadvantages, were improved while a positive response was formed to the foldable phone.

5th-generation foldable phone parts maker running once more, will it prepare an opportunity for a rebound?

First of all, the application processor (AP), which is the brain of Flip 5 and Fold 5, is equipped with Qualcomm’s ‘Snapdragon 8 2nd Generation’. It was also installed in the ‘Galaxy S23′ series, Samsung Electronics’ flagship model in the first half of the year. It is characterized by being made with a Galaxy-customized AP.

The RAM is 8 gigabytes (GB) for the Flip 5 and 12 GB for the Fold 5. The storage capacity consists of two versions, 256GB and 512GB. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix supply memory and image sensors.

In the case of the Flip 5, the biggest difference is the external screen. It is 3.4 inches, regarding 1.5 times larger than the previous version (2.1 inches). It is expected that it will be possible to check and send various messages even when the device is folded. The Flip 4 was the best at using Samsung Pay and checking notifications. The inside is 6.7 inches as it is. The Fold 5 is identical to the Fold 4 at 7.6 inches and 6.2 inches, respectively.

Samsung Display still monopolizes panels that account for more than 40% of the cost of foldable phones. Ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG), which protects foldable displays, has formed a partial dual system. Samsung Display cooperates with Schott (glass) and Dowoo Insys (processing) in Germany, and Samsung Electronics with Corning (glass) and Iconi (processing) in the United States. It is understood that the proportion of electrons is still overwhelming.

The special protective film attached to the UTG is procured from Saekyung Hi-Tech. The film protects the UTG, improves the sense of touch, and prevents fingerprints.

The Fold 5 weighs 254g less than its predecessor (263g), resulting in weight reduction. In addition, as the thickness of the border (bezel) becomes thinner, it is predicted that the large screen feature will stand out.

The S Pen is carried separately even on the Fold 5. The key is when the built-in structure can be implemented like in the past Galaxy Note series. Accordingly, the electromagnetic resonance (EMR) method was maintained as the S Pen recognition system. It is a technology that detects and inputs signals through the magnetic field generated by the display and the electromagnetic induction generated by the S Pen.

At this time, a digitizer, which is a flexible circuit board (FPCB) for recognizing the S pen, is required at the bottom of the panel. allow a magnetic field to occur. The digitizer is known to be provided by Interflex, and the electromagnetic wave shielding film for the digitizer is provided by Innox Advanced Materials.

Another notable part of the new product is the hinge. The hinge applied so far is a ‘U-type’, and when the screen is folded, there is a section that opens slightly. Samsung Electronics plans to change it to a ‘droplet type’ so that the two sides are in perfect contact and reduce internal wrinkles.

The hinge is composed of exterior and interior parts, each of which serves as a support with a joint needed to fold and unfold the two panels and a plate that supports the foldable panel. Strictly speaking, an internal hinge is not a seam, but it is called an internal hinge to distinguish it from an external hinge.

To realize the waterdrop type, the exterior hinge supplied by KH Vatech is changed. The average selling price (ASP) is expected to rise by regarding 50%. The built-in hinge will be handled by Fine M-Tech, a newly established company from Fine Technics. There is a possibility that Fine M-Tech and Nex Plus will be registered as dual companies in exterior and interior, respectively.

As a result, the Flip 5 is just 15.1 millimeters thick when folded. The Fold 5 is 6.1 millimeters (mm) when unfolded and 13.4 mm when folded, regarding 0.2 mm thinner than its predecessor.

The camera performance is said to be similar to that of the 4th generation foldable phone. Flip 5 has 10 million pixels on the front and 12 million pixels on the back. The Fold 5 is regarding 12 million pixels on the front and 50 million pixels on the back. Camera module suppliers are Samsung Electro-Mechanics, MCNEX, Cammsys, and Power Logics, which are almost the same as before. China’s Sunny Optical is expected to advance to the Flip 5 following the Fold 5.

The battery capacity is the same as the previous one, with 3700 megaampere hours (mAh) for the Flip 5 and 4400 mAh for the Fold 5. As for procurement companies, it is estimated that a three-way system will continue, including Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solutions, and China’s ATL.

The price of the Flip 5 and Fold 5 is likely to increase by 50,000 to 100,000 won from the previous model. This is due to the rise in the price of key parts such as displays and hinges. They are estimated at 1.4 million won and 2.1 million won, respectively, for 256GB products. The 512GB product goes up in the early 100,000 won range.

Meanwhile, according to Kiwoom Securities, Samsung Electronics’ foldable phone shipments are expected to increase from 10.1 million last year to 12.3 million this year.
