Last year, 828 people died from industrial accidents, 54 fewer than the previous year.

The ‘accident death rate’, which indicates the number of accident deaths per 10,000 workers, also decreased by 0.03.

By industry, the construction industry accounted for more than half of the deaths from industrial accidents at 417, followed by the manufacturing industry with 184.

The construction and manufacturing sectors decreased by 41 and 17 people, respectively, compared to the previous year, but other industries increased by 4 people.

In particular, as demand for delivery increases due to the spread of COVID-19, the death toll of delivery workers is steadily increasing.

By accident type, conventional accidents such as falling or getting caught still accounted for more than half.

By business size, 80.9% were small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, not covered by the Serious Accidents Act.

In addition, it was analyzed that 4 out of 10 workers who died were elderly people over the age of 60.

Foreign workers also recorded 102 deaths, or 12.3% of the total.

With the enforcement of the Serious Accident Punishment Act in January, the government expects that this year’s industrial accident death toll will drop to the low 700s.

In order to reduce the number of deaths, the government plans to continue providing support for safety investment innovation projects this year, especially for workplaces with fewer than 50 employees, where accidents frequently occur.
