[국제]Italy, overflowing with tourists, ‘troubled’…to limit the number of visitors

[앵커]

It is said that these days, when overseas travel is free as the Corona 19 quarantine regulations are lifted, Italy is troubled by the influx of tourists.

As the problem of so-called ‘excess tourism’, which exceeds the limit of acceptance, continues, various countermeasures have been made, but with no significant effect.

Reporter Jong-yoon Son from Italy reports what the situation is.

The area around the Trevi Fountain, a tourist attraction in Rome, is crowded with tourists.

You can see people washing their necks or soaking their feet to cool off at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A tourist was caught by the police for taking fountain water in a plastic bottle and was fined 450 euros or regarding 600,000 Korean won.

I’m on the Spanish Steps, another tourist attraction.

In order to protect the cultural heritage, it is forbidden to sit on the stairs or eat food.

Whether you know this or not, tourists sit on the steps to relax and even set up street vendors.

There seem to be too many people violating the law for the number of police officers deployed, making it difficult to control.

As such, Italy has long been suffering from ‘overtourism’, so-called overtourism.

In particular, as the demand for travel, which has been suppressed by the recent easing of COVID-19 quarantine regulations, explodes, the number of tourists that are difficult to handle in a short period of time is flocking.

Industry workers are also not happy with this situation.

Last year, protests took place in Venice, a floating city, refusing to enter the port of a large cruise ship carrying tourists.

The problems that large ships cause marine pollution and threaten the safety of cities built on swamps are more urgent than revitalization of tourism.

[제인 다모스타 / 이탈리아 베네치아 : 베네치아를 위해 해결할 수 있는 것은 다른 종류의 선박 관광일 것입니다. 이렇게 거대한 선박일 필요는 없습니다.]

Since last month, Venice has introduced an ‘advance reservation system’, limiting the number of daily visitors to less than 50,000.

Next, from next year, only one-day tourists will be charged an entrance fee of 10 euros per person and KRW 13,000 in Korean money.
