Ahead of the NATO summit, the first overseas visit of President Yoon Seok-yeol, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the meeting would be the first to deal with China.
He also said that the size of the NATO response force, which currently stands at 40,000, will be increased to more than 300,000, and a new strategic concept will be adopted according to the new security reality.

Prior to the NATO summit to be held in Madrid, Spain on the 29th, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced the plan to expand the NATO response force.

The plan is to increase NATO’s troop resources for emergency situations by nearly eight times from the current 40,000.
NATO has been deploying additional troops in Eastern Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
Secretary-General Stoltenberg also said that defense spending is needed, and that defense spending by European allies and Canada will increase for the eighth year in a row this year.
Nine out of 30 NATO member states have met NATO’s goal of increasing defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product, and 19 said they will reach that goal by 2024.
In particular, he said that at this NATO summit, a new strategic concept will be adopted to suit the new security realities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It will identify Russia as the most significant and direct threat to NATO’s security, and will also address China’s challenge for the first time.

It also said that responses to growing Russian and Chinese influence in its southern neighbors will be discussed.
Secretary-General Stoltenberg welcomed the leaders of South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand to the summit for the first time, saying that it will deepen cooperation with its closest partners.
