Samsung SDI also promotes a battery plant… What is the background of US investment?

Samsung SDI has decided to build an electric vehicle battery plant in the United States in cooperation with a local automaker.

Reporter Park Hong-gu covered the reasons why Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor, are competing in US investments.

Samsung SDI and US automaker Stellantis have agreed to establish a new electric vehicle battery production plant in Indiana, foreign media reported.

The plant aims to start operation in 2025.

President Biden also confirmed this plan during a visit to Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek plant on the 20th.

As a result, all three domestic battery makers will have production plants in the United States.

LG Energy Solutions is already building plants in Ohio and Tennessee with General Motors, and SK On is building plants in Georgia in partnership with Ford.

The United States previously announced a policy to convert 50% of finished car sales to eco-friendly cars by 2030.

Accordingly, the eco-friendly car market in the US is expected to grow from 850,000 units this year to 4.72 million units in 2030.

The world’s largest electric vehicle market is expected to open in earnest within a few years.

Hyundai Motor Group announced a $10.5 billion investment plan in the US, including the establishment of an electric vehicle-only plant in Georgia, with a plan to sell 840,000 electric vehicles in the United States by 2030.

The successive investments of domestic companies in the US are also related to the ‘New North American Trade Agreement’.

According to this agreement, starting from July next year, 75% of parts for finished vehicles must be produced locally in order to receive duty-free benefits.

In order to secure price competitiveness in the US market, direct investment in the US has no choice but to increase.

If the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is fully operational in the future, the regional supply chain cooperation system such as semiconductors and energy will inevitably be further consolidated.

Analysts say that the expansion of Korean companies’ investment in the US can also be viewed in terms of securing a stable supply chain.
