Prosecutors launched a full-scale investigation, including a search and seizure of the home of an opposition politician accused of receiving illegal political funds.
According to the legal community on the 20th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office 2nd Anti-Corruption Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-cheol) and 2nd Public Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Lee Sang-hyun) had served as regional chairpersons of the Democratic Party on charges of mediation and violation of the Public Official Election Act on the 18th. Lee’s residence and office were seized and searched.
Prosecutors said they had seized and searched residences and offices to obtain relevant documents.
Mr. Lee is accused of receiving money and valuables worth hundreds of millions of won from a businessman several times over three years from 2019. There are also reports that Lee received not only cash but also expensive gifts from acquaintances of the businessman.
Prosecutors are said to be investigating whether Lee received a solicitation, such as asking for business convenience, in the process of receiving money and valuables.
Prosecutors are expected to summon Lee for investigation as soon as the analysis of the confiscated material is completed.
Meanwhile, Lee was a former vice-chairman of the Democratic Party, and served as the deputy director of the presidential election campaign committee for Moon Jae-in in the 2017 presidential election and as the deputy director of the presidential election campaign of candidate Lee Jae-myung in the last presidential election.
In addition, Lee ran for a constituency in Seoul through nominations by the Democratic Party, including the 2016 and 2020 National Assembly elections and the re/by-election in March of this year, but was defeated.
